Sports bulletin.

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean will be grateful that their gold medal performance in 1984 - twenty six years ago for the benefit of the Telegraph - was shown again on Australian TV this morning. Maybe the women's curling team from 02 will get a mention tomorrow. How do papers do this? It's not like Britain comes back from any Winter Olympics with so many medals that it's easy to overlook people. Lazy journos who can't be arsed to do five minutes of googling? No wonder the bastards running the country get such an easy ride.

  1. How do papers do this?

Simple. How many people who read it noticed? Or bothered to check?

  2. The Telegraph headline was badly worded, what the headline in the UK has been today is:

GB's first individual Gold medalist since Robin Cousins in 1980, so yes, 30 years.

As opposed to the icedance team of T&D, and the Curling team in 2002.

  3. You're right, Huriye. I've seen the 'individual medal' phrase used elsewhere on the online Telegraph. However, that brings up another question: does the Telegraph rate individual medals as somehow more valuable than when they've been won by a pair or a team? First is first and gold is gold, surely. Either headline smacks of slack journalism to me.
